Spiders can kill in more ways than one, and a Michigan man, who had a run in with one of the eight-legged creatures, earlier this week, learned that lesson the hard way. It was a harrowing scene at a Michigan gas station when a man inadvertently set his car and a gas pump on fire while trying to kill a spider.
The incident occurred at a gas station located on the corner of Van Dyke and 10 Mile Road in Center Line, according to WJBK FOX 2. The man was pumping gas in his car when he noticed one of the eight-legged creatures crawling on his fuel tank, and considering the fact that he is terrified of spiders, he did the only thing he thought he could do at the time to eradicate the arachnid. He pulled a lighter from his pocket and attempted to torch the creepy crawler.
However, his ill-devised plan did not play out as he expected. Instead, the flame from the lighter ignited gas fumes and set the car and gas pump afire. The driver quickly removed the gas nozzle from the tank and threw it to the ground. Susan Adams, the clerk on duty at the gas station during the incident, watched the event unfold from the safety of the station. She said the man was not smoking a cigarette or anything but all of a sudden, when she looked out the window, all she could see was flames. Adams acted fast, hitting the automatic gas shutoff valve and then rushed to call the local fire department for assistance.
After pulling his car forward, the man ran and grabbed a nearby fire extinguisher. He was able to put the fire out before firefighters arrived on the scene and before the gas pump could explode. The man returned to the gas station the next day and apologized to Adams. She said, “It’s just one of those things that happen, stupidity! Gas go BOOM!”
A surveillance camera captured the entire incident as it unfolded. Following the attempted spider murder, employees at the gas station had a good time with the video adding funny audio to accompany the driver’s asinine behavior, both of which caused the video to go viral on social media.
Luckily, no one was injured during the fiery incident, and the man’s car was barely damaged during the blaze. No charges have been filed against the driver. The gas station’s insurance company is expected to cover the cost of damages to the station. There has been no word as to the spider’s fate.
