Model and skateboarding phenomenon Dylan Rieder has died at age 28. He passed away Wednesday, October 12. His death was reportedly caused by leukemia-related complications.
According to Rolling Stone, Rieder grew up in Westminster, California. There, he took up skateboarding before his teenage years and began skating professionally for Alien Workshop at age 18.
Throughout his skating career, Rieder has been an industry favorite. He was known for the gracefulness and effortlessness of his boarding, as well as his video appearances. These traits have influenced a generation of skaters who have watched his work, and will likely continue to impact the skating industry after his death.
Among Rieder’s noteworthy skating appearances are Transworld Skateboarding’s A Time to Shine (2006), Alien Workshop’s Mind Field (2009), and his solo part as the star of Gravis Footwear’s Dylan (2010), named after the skater and model himself. Last year, he was awarded Best Part by Transworld Skateboarding for his role in Supreme’s Cherry.
Rieder’s modeling skills are also rather noteworthy. He starred in DKNY’s 2014 advertising campaign, along with models Cara Delevigne, Jourdan Dunn, and rapper A$AP Rocky.
Yesterday, Transworld Skateboarding posted the news of Rieder’s death on their website, along with a picture of the model-skateboarder sporting a handsome suit and sitting beside an equally handsome dog. “It’s hard to believe even typing this—we lost one of the best to ever step on a skateboard today,” the post reads. “Dylan Rieder, whose flawless style, explosive power, and epic video parts influenced an entire generation and beyond, passed away today… Rest in peace, Dylan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in this unbelievably difficult time.”
The Transworld Skateboarding post included further instructions to those wishing to express their sympathy to Rieder’s family. Instead of flowers, his loved ones have requested that fans and fellow mourners make donations to Dr. Stephen Forman, who is a worldwide leukemia, lymphoma, and bone marrow transplant expert. Ozzy Osbourne is also among those publicly mourning the loss of Rieder. Yesterday after Rieder’s passing, he posted on Twitter, “Dylan Rieder. One of the most talent[ed] & brave men. I feel blessed to have known you. Rest In Peace Dylan. My love & condolences to his family.” His condolences were accompanied by a photo of the two men, with Rieder smiling and Osbourne giving a thumbs up.
