Swansea City AFC have named a new coach. In doing so, they have made history, and not every English Premier League (EPL) fan may like it. For the first time, a Yankee is taking control of a team in the UK. Thats right, following the team parting ways with Francesco Guidolin, Swansea City named former United States boss Bob Bradley as their new coach.
The club is 17th in the Premier League, following a 2-1 loss to Liverpool on Saturday. This led to the dismissal of Guidolin. This opened the door for the 58-year-old Bradley to come in. Before coming to Swansea City, Bradley was in charge of Le Havre, a second-tier team in the French league.
The signing of Bradley marks the first time an American has been given the head job with a team in any of Europes five top leagues, according to ESPN. Bradley calls it a unique opportunity and also thanked Le Havre for giving him exposure that allowed him to be considered for a position in a top tier league.
Huw Jenkins, chairman for Swansea City AFC released a statement that they are delighted that Bradley is joining the club. He said that he is highly regarded as a coach and brings with him a wealth of domestic and international experience. He is aware of Swansea’s footballing philosophy and will bring new life and enthusiasm to the squad. The team hopes he will be with the team for a long time.
The team was disappointed to part ways with the 61-year-old Guidolin, but the team needed a quick change of direction to move forward with positive momentum. The team wished their former coach and his staff the best as they move into their next chapter.
Swansea City AFC was purchased in July by an American consortium. The consortium is led by Steve Kaplan and Jason Levien. One of Bradley’s former players, Landon Donovan, is a shareholder in the team. Donovan played for Bradley when he coached the U.S. Men’s National Team from 2006-2011. He was replaced by Jurgen Klinsmann, who Donovan has had a rocky relationship with. After leaving the U.S. team, Bradley spent time managing the Egyptian National Team, in with the Norwegian club, Stabaek.
Bradley would have liked to finish the season with Le Havre, to see them through to the end, but the chance to coach in the best league in the world, he had to take it. Bob Bradley becoming the coach of an English Premier League team is huge news for U.S. soccer.
