A missing hiker from Phoenix, Arizona, was found dead on Monday, November 28, in California‘s Sequoia National Park. Vince Scalise, 41, was supposed to return from a five-day backpacking trip last Wednesday, but did not. Rescue crews began to search for him on Sunday, after the park service was notified on Saturday night.
The Los Angeles Times reported that crews found the body of Scalise in the area of Panther Creek and the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River, in California’s Sequoia National Park. According to the Fresno Bee, on November 18, Scalise “had gone hiking up the Kaweah River’s Middle Fork Trailhead.”
At least four different crews of searchers had been organized and engaged in finding Vince Scalise. The crews were “from Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Yosemite National Park and Yosemite search-and-rescue dog teams,” according to the Fresno Bee.
Scalise was supposed to return from the backpacking trip on Wednesday after camping at Panther Creek. The cause of the backpacker’s death “is under investigation.”
Scalise’s father, Mike, according to ABC 15 News, believed that his son was coming home from California’s Sequoia National Park to Phoenix, Arizona, for Thanksgiving. When Vince Scalise did not return from the backpacking trip, as scheduled, his father said that everyone they knew, including family and friends were praying.
In the area of California’s Sequoia National Park where Scalise was believed to be missing, “rain and snow had fallen” and overnight temperatures had dropped below freezing. The snowfall that occurred was in the higher elevations of the National Park, according to Bakersfield Now.
Camping under those conditions would necessitate proper gear. It is unclear if Scalise had such camping gear with him, and if the inclement weather conditions contributed to his death.
The cause of Vince Scalise’s death will be determined by “the Tulare County coroner.” The investigation into the death of Vince Scalise is still ongoing.
On Monday, the search for missing Phoenix, Arizona backpacker, Vince Scalise, ended, when search and rescue crews found his body in California’s Sequoia National Park. He had gone on a five-day backpacking trip, which was supposed to end last Wednesday, but instead, Scalise went missing, and a search for him was not initiated until this past weekend.
