On Monday, three people, two children and one adult, were killed, and several others were injured in a Halloween hayride accident in the small rural town of Chunky, Mississippi. The fatal accident occurred when a flat-bed trailer carrying people out for a hayride was struck by another vehicle. Newton County Coroner Danny Shoemaker said that all three of the people who were killed in the accident were riding on the hayride and they were all related.
The small town of Chunky, where the tragedy took place, has a population of about 325 and it is located in eastern Mississippi, “about 80 miles west of Jackson,” according to Tulsa World. ABC News reported that the ages and names of the three victims and exactly how they are related to each other will be released after their family members are notified.
What would usually be a fun-filled Halloween activity turned tragic when the flat-bed trailer the people were riding on was hit by another vehicle. Two of the victims died at the scene and the third victim died while waiting for emergency transport to airlife them to the nearest hospital. Mississippi Highway Patrol Capt. Johnny Poulos said that some of the other people riding on the trailer “had life-threatening injuries,” according to ABC News, and that multiple ambulances and three helicopters transported people injured in the wreck to three different hospitals.
In an interview with the Associated Press (AP), Poulos said that the accident happened at approximately 7:45 p.m. CDT when a vehicle struck a flat-bed trailer hayride. There have not yet been any details released about the number of people injured, according to ABC News. Also, Poulos said he did not know if a certain group was sponsoring the hayride.
Shoemaker described the scene of the wreck on U.S. Highway 80 as being total chaos. He mentioned that some of the children riding on the trailer were still dressed up in their costumes.
