After a heart breaking 1-2 loss to Everton, Arsenal FC falls from the top spot in the Premier League. After ascending to the top spot in the league, the Gunners gave up more than just first place.
The loss broke Arsenal’s unbeaten streak on the road that started with a win in Barcelona in March. The Gunners had been the heart attack kids as of late, coming back from behind to win, however, against Everton the team held the lead for most of the first half.
In the 20th minute Alexis Sánchez scored for the Gunners off of a free kick. As the first half was coming to an end, Seamus Coleman took a cross from Leighton Baines to head the ball into the net for the equalizer. The game stayed locked at 1-1 until the 86th minute when Everton cashed in with another header. Ashley Williams connected his dome to a Ross Barkley cross to give Everton a 2-1 lead.
Everton just outplayed the Gunners. Arsenal FC, with the exception of their first half goal, did not create many opportunities to add to their score, according to ESPN FC. And, on top of that, they allowed two different defenders for Everton score.
While they got the win, all is not good for Everton. While taking the Gunners out, where was the offense. A full-back tied the game up and a center-back gave the team the win. For Everton to really be a threat throughout the Premier League, they must have a balanced attack, both on the offense and defense, and not rely on their backs to score.
The Gunners can take one positive away from the loss. While the loss for Arsenal FC was not good, Sanchez’s first half goal was his 12th of the current Premier League campaign, tying Diego Costa for the most goals of the season. Sanchez was a bright spot for Arsenal, but it was not enough against Everton.
To get back to the top, Arsenal FC must find their scoring again They cannot rely only on Sánchez. The rest of the offense must get into the mix and the team must create opportunities and capitalize on them. The same goes for Everton. While a defensive player scoring is great, the offense needs to create and finish if they are going to continue to be successful.
