A 9-year-old boy was shot in the head on Wednesday afternoon during a drive-by shooting in Kearns, Utah. The boy was flown to a hospital in Salt Lake City, about 15 miles away. He is listed in critical condition.
The Porterville Recorder reported that the boy was in the backseat of a SUV with other children. At the time of the shooting, the SUV was parked near an intersection when he was shot in the head. The boy was struck by a bullet fired from someone who was driving a black BMW on another street.
The person reportedly fired a gun at least once, as the BMW sedan passed. The bullet that hit the boy’s head passed through the windshield of the SUV before finding its final mark. The Kearns, Utah police stated that “the shooting occurred in the area of 5300 West Stockton Street around 2 p.m.”
Unified Police Detective Ken Hansen said, officers believe it is possible that the shooting may be related to gang violence and that their intended target was someone else. He added that he “did not have further details.” No arrests have yet been made in connection with the shooting of the boy from Utah, and no motive for the shooting has been suggested.
Officers are interviewing witnesses. According to FOX 13, deputies are searching for two suspects who fled the scene. The two suspects have been described as Hispanic males. They are estimated to be in their late teens. Both suspects were wearing red clothing and Chicago Bulls hats. They were traveling in a 2010, black BMW 535 with black rims and red rotors. The license plate on the vehicle is E968TY. The vehicle was found by the police at a different location later on Wednesday afternoon. It had been abandoned in the Salt Lake City area.
