Those who travel frequently between England and Australia were delighted to learn that Australia’s Qantas Airlines will be offering fliers the world’s first direct flight between the two countries, cutting down the travel time substantially. Seats for this journey will be available in April of 2017, with the flights becoming regular as of March 2018.
Skift reveals that the Qantas flights will be going from London to Australia, and vice versa. It will take approximately 17 hours, compared to the multi-day trip travelers have been forced to endure up until now, often with multiple layovers in various countries. In its 80-year existence, the nonstop journey marks the fastest and shortest way passengers can experience the Kangaroo Route.
The distance is 9,000 miles and this feat can be achieved via Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes, which have two engines rather than four and are much more fuel-efficient. The company will start to receive these jets in the new year, reports CNN Money.
It is expected that even those who do not live in Perth or its surrounding area will make the journey, in order to take advantage of this new opportunity. The moment that the news broke on social media, users were quick to comment their upcoming plans to book a flight and finally go on a trip they have always wanted to, but did not feel the extensive amount of travel time would be worth it in the end.
Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas, gave a statement in which he gushed over the “huge opportunities” these direct flights open up for the company, this according to Traveller.com.au. The new route is “game-changing,” he continues, adding that he is looking into the possibility of flying direct from Australia to eastern United States locations such as Chicago or Dallas.
Qantas was established in 1920, making it the world’s third-oldest airline. Fifteen years later, the company began offering international flights. Nicknamed by locals as “The Flying Kangaroo,” its official name is an acronym standing for Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services. Its main hub is Sydney Airport, and it holds a 65 percent share of the country’s domestic market. It is the biggest airline in Australia, due to the size of its fleet and the number of international destinations and flights they offer. Flights to and from Los Angeles, as well as Dubai have significantly boosted the airline’s world-wide brand. They own a number of subsidiaries, including Jetstar and Australian AirExpress, as well as Network Aviation.
