On Thursday, December 29, a robbery suspect in Phoenix, Arizona was shot by police during a failed carjacking attempt. A veteran police sergeant fired at the 29-year-old male suspect, after using a Taser did not stop him. The robbery suspect looked to be pointing a firearm at a mother and child who were inside their minivan, after he abandoned the small U-Haul truck he was driving.
ABC News reported that Arizona police spokesman Sgt. Vince Lewis said the police had been chasing the suspect for nearly two hours, at times through heavy traffic, before he left the U-Haul truck he was driving at an intersection. He then allegedly pointed a gun at a woman with her infant daughter in a vehicle close by.
The police began chasing the robbery suspect Thursday afternoon, according to Lewis, in Peoria, a suburb of Phoenix, when a man robbed a convenience store. Fox News reported that the chase began at “around 4 p.m.” Until the seriously wounded suspect is booked into jail following his release from the hospital, his name is being withheld.
ABC News reported that the suspect was chased by the Peoria, Arizona police, who attempted to pull over the truck. Instead of pulling over, the suspect sped away. Unmarked police vehicles and a helicopter from the Phoenix Police Department began tailing the suspect.
The U-Haul truck was also tailed by a television news helicopter. According to Fox News, when the suspect drove into Phoenix, Arizona, the Phoenix police took over the chase. The footage taken and televised by the helicopter showed the truck as it ran red lights and maneuvered around vehicles, and then as it went through Paradise Valley, a upscale Phoenix neighborhood.
The footage was streamed live on the internet. In the footage, the male suspect can be seen pointing his gun at the vehicle the woman and her daughter are in, while trying to open the door of their minivan and yelling something.
Three police officers can be seen in the footage approaching the minivan on foot. A police sergeant, who is SWAT team member, told the suspect to surrender. The suspect continued pointing his gun at the female driver of the minivan, prompting the police sergeant to fire his gun at the male suspect, who then fell to the ground.
The man then put his arms up into the air, and was quickly surrounded by police. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the suspect, after being hit by the Taser and shot, was in stable condition.
Lewis stated that the male robbery suspect was hit multiple times, but he is expected to survive. Continuing, Lewis said that the driver of the minivan and her daughter were not harmed in the incident, and he said she was grateful for the quick actions of the sergeant.
The suspect, according to Lewis, is also person of interest in an armed robbery that took place at a north Phoenix area motel earlier this week.
No police officers were injured, and the incident is under investigation. The police are expected to have more information about the incident and details about the arrest soon. The incident Thursday took place in the middle of Phoenix, Arizona rush-hour traffic.
