On Monday night, three kids were shot and killed in Albuquerque, New Mexico and their mother was critically wounded trying to pull them to safety in an ambush by a gunman inside their house. Police are describing the confrontation by the gunman and the shooting of the children and their mother “as a violent and senseless act.”
The Washington Post reported that during a press conference on Tuesday, Albuquerque Police Chief Gordon Eden said the mother, 36, is in critical condition, but she is stable. The three children who were killed were a 5-year-old boy, a 6-year-old girl, and a 9-year-old boy. Eden said early evidence suggests that the suspect who attacked the family, George Daniel Wechsler, 45, had a short-lived relationship with the children’s mother.
Weschler reportedly broke into the house in Albuquerque and lay in wait there for the mother and her three children to return home, at which time, he shot them. Weschler had repeatedly asked the woman if he could come over to visit the kids and give them Christmas presents, but she had said no, and the police said she had told him “to stay away,” on several occasions when he asked to visit.
According to FOX News, the shooting took place “around 6:30 p.m. Monday.” A woman called the police for help.
When the police arrived on the scene, where the break in and fatal shooting had taken place, they found Weschler. He had shot himself and was unconscious. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
According to the Albuquerque Journal, police said there was a trail of blood from the woman’s house to the next door house.” According to neighbor Preston Rel, who was sitting outside Monday, “he heard about 15 to 20 gunshots coming from the house.”
Albuquerque police have not yet been able to talk to the mother of the three children, as she remains in critical condition. There is evidence, Eden said, she fought back to try to protect her children, despite having been shot.
Eden said, the mother was critically injured while attempting to save one of her children. The names of the mother and her children have not been released, pending notification of other family members.
Weschler had a history of criminal activity prior to the crime perpetrated against the mother and her three kids in Albuquerque. One charge he was previously arrested on was aggravated battery, which included stalking and harassment.
FOX News reported that Mayor Richard Berry gave a statement, in which he “called for the city to come together.” He also described the shooting as a “senseless and tragic act of violence.”
A man in Albuquerque, New Mexico, George Daniel Wechsler, 45, who shot and killed three children and then critically wounded their mother turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. Weschler reportedly ambushed the family by breaking into their house and waiting for them to arrive. Officials with the Albuquerque school district have said their crisis management team, along with others are ready to support the victims’ classmates.
