There were plenty of winners at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, but one of the night’s biggest winners was none other than the musical La La Land. The modern-day musical cleaned up at the awards ceremony as it made history winning the most ever Golden Globes.
According to E! News, La La Land came out on top in all seven major categories for which it was nominated in at the Golden Globe Awards. This included Best Picture for a Musical or Comedy, Best Actor and Best Actress. The film also won both of the musical categories it was nominated in, Best Original Song and Best Original Score.
With the movie dominating the awards season chatter, it really should not have come as a big surprise to many just how well La La Land ultimately did at the Golden Globe Awards. The movie, which stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling (in their third film together) officially broke the record for most awards won at the Globes which had previously been held by Midnight Express (from 1978) and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (from 1975).
As each person who accepted an award took the stage, it was clear that not only was there plenty of excitement, but also a great deal of respect for the other people they worked with. When Ryan Gosling won his Best Actor award, he told Emma Stone and director Damien Chazelle that the award belonged to all of them and while he would split it into thirds, he did not think that would ultimately be a good idea.
When the entire cast and crew took the Golden Globe Awards stage in order to accept the night’s top honor of Best Picture, it was further cemented just how excited the group was as Fred Berger, the film’s producer, was simply unable to contain his apparent joy. In his speech, the La La Land producer said that he could not even begin to explain how insane he found it all to be. When they started their journey six years before it was like a fantasy and so to be standing on the stage as the big winners was simply surreal to him.
With La La Land winning all of the categories for which they were nominated in at the Golden Globe Awards, now many are looking to the next major awards ceremony, the Oscars. While there have certainly been upsets in the past, one wonders whether or not this musical might once more strike gold at another awards ceremony.
Were you surprised that La La Land won in all of the categories they were nominated for? Do you think this is a sign of what is to come at the Oscars? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
