Awards ceremonies tend to be known as much for the acceptance speeches as they are the awards being handed out, and the Golden Globe Awards is no exception. One winner, Ryan Gosling, used his moment in the spotlight to both joke with a fellow nominee, as well as to honor his family in a heartfelt and emotional speech.
While it probably comes as no surprise to many that the actor was able to pull off the victory in the Best Actor category for a comedy or musical for his work in La La Land, it certainly seemed a bit surprising to the actor himself. As he began his acceptance speech, Ryan Gosling first joked that this was not the first time that he had been mistaken for fellow nominee Ryan Reynolds. He said that it is starting to get out of hand.
The actor continued by saying that his award was a group effort and said that he shared the win with his costar, Emma Stone, and his director Damien Chazelle. He even offered to split the trophy in thirds, although he joked that it could ruin their friendships if they tried to decide who would get what piece.
However, it was Ryan Gosling’s tribute to his family and his longtime partner Eva Mendes that was the true highlight of the actor’s speech. As the actor pointed out there are many people who contribute to the making of a movie, but there was one person he wanted to thank properly, his “Lady.” The actor said that while he was having one of the best times of his life working on a film, singing and dancing, she was at home raising their daughter, while also pregnant with their second child, as well as trying to care for her brother who was battling cancer.
As Ryan Gosling explained, if Eva Mendes had not taken all of that on herself, he would not have been where he was and someone else would have been accepting the award. He wrapped up his speech by simply thanking her for all she has done, sending his love to his two daughters and then finally dedicating his award to Juan Carlos, Mendes’ brother, who died of cancer at the age of 53 last year.
While acceptance speeches at the many awards ceremonies vary by person, it is always touching to hear the actors and actresses honor their families. In the case of Ryan Gosling, it was clear that while he has no problem with showcasing his humor during such a momentous moment in his career, it was also a chance for him to thank his partner for all that she has done to allow him these opportunities as well.
