The 2017 Golden Globe Awards had plenty of stellar moments and speeches, but one actor whose acceptance speech seemed to hit the wrong note with some viewers was Tom Hiddleston. The actor, who was nominated and won his very first Golden Globe, decided to use his speech in order to bring attention to the civil war that is currently happening in the South Sudan. In particular, he spoke about the doctors and nurses he interacted with when he worked with the United Nations Children’s Fund.
As Yahoo News reported, Tom Hiddleston spoke about how these nurses and doctors had binge-watched The Night Manager, the show for which he won the award. In his speech, the actor said that he was truly moved by the idea that these people who are out in the world trying to fix what was broken can be provided with some relief and even entertainment from the movies and TV shows that he and his fellow actors and actresses work on. He then proceeded to dedicate his Golden Globe to all the people in the world who are out there attempting to do their very best.
Sadly, Tom Hiddleston’s words were immediately criticized on social media. Viewers on Twitter called the actor out for being awkward, tone-deaf and even self-indulgent with his choice of words. For many, the criticism stemmed from the idea that the actor was trivializing a humanitarian crisis.
Ultimately, this criticism has led to Tom Hiddleston issuing an apology for his speech on Facebook. In his apology post, the actor said that he did agree with people who his speech was inelegant. He explained that going on stage, he was nervous, which led to his words not coming out the way he may have intended them to.
The actor said that his only intentions with his acceptance speech was to bring attention to both the courage and bravery that the men and women who work tirelessly with organizations such as Doctors Without Borders, UNICEF and World Food Programme, to name a few. The speech was also his way to bring attention to the children who live in the South Sudan and continue to find some measure of joy and hope even in some of the most difficult of conditions. To conclude his apology, Hiddleston let people know that he was sorry that his nerves were able to get the better of him when he tried to speak about the men and women out there helping the world.
