Early predictions for Beauty and the Beast‘s box office success saw the movie potentially making nearly $200 million. With that number the film would have been in rare company. However, it looks like the predictions may have actually been too low and with sold out movie theaters and plenty of happy fans spreading the word that the film is even better than they could have predicted, Beauty and the Beast is looking to have an amazing opening weekend at the box office.
According to Cinema Blend, when the numbers were tallied for the early previews from Thursday night, the film had already managed to bring in an impressive $16.3 million. When the box office numbers were tallied for both the early previews and the domestic totals from Friday, the number skyrocketed to $173 million. With these numbers only taking into account the domestic totals and not the global numbers, it is relatively certain that Beauty and the Beast will be able to break the $200 million mark that was originally predicted.
In fact, based on just the numbers from Thursday night and Friday, the new box office predictions see the movie potentially bringing in an amazing $300 million in just its opening weekend. As of Friday, the movie has opened in 43 markets around the world including the United Kingdom, China, Mexico and Spain. Based on the current numbers globally, the film is currently sitting at international totals of $115.6 million.
Since these numbers do not take into account Saturday and Sunday, it looks like Beauty and the Beast should easily be able to make it to the $300 million mark and it is also entirely possible it could even surpass that number. If the movie is able to do this it will be in rarefied company that includes only three other films, The Avengers, Jurassic World and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
It really should come as no surprise that the film is doing so well at the box office, even if the numbers are even higher than predicted. Disney has always been something of a powerhouse and in recent years they have been working hard to bring back classics in a new way with their live action remakes. Even with movies such as The Jungle Book only pulling in $103 million for its own opening the weekend, the film was able to make $966 million in its theatrical run, which means that with the pace that Beauty and the Beast is setting, the film is likely to prove to be more than able to break the $300 million mark in its opening weekend. If the film continues to defy expectations, it is likely that Disney will have their first movie to break $1 billion at the box office.
