There was talk a few months ago that Ben Roethlisberger’s future could be uncertain. He was reviewing all of his options. A few months later, his mind may be changing.
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback may not be leaving the game at least this year. When asked if he was returning in 2017 he recently said that he is “learning towards it”, according to the NFL. Pittsburgh fans may be in huge relief after hearing that.
Ben Roethlisberger has served as the Steelers quarterback for a long time, and that changing would seem odd. It would not be the same for the Steelers, and retiring now would not make much sense. In addition to still having his health, he still has his ability on the field.
The Steelers star still has the ability to compete at a high level. At 35-years-old, Roethlisberger may still have a couple of years of football left in him. It seems like there will be one more at the very least.
One thing that could have played a huge factor in Roethlisberger even contemplating not returning may have been the ending to the Steelers season. It was a disappointing ending. When it came to playing the New England Patriots in the conference finals, the Steelers were out-matched.
After the Steelers had put together a string of consecutive wins, the Patriots brought them stop to that. They defeated Pittsburgh 17-36, bringing their season to a screeching stop. New England left the Steelers to 19 points unanswered for.
It came as a huge hit for the team, and maybe Roethlisberger personally. It was not his best work, but it was not the team’s best work. They made many mistakes that were costly, but the only thing they can do is learn from them and move forward.
Aside from their season ending game to the Patriots, Roethlisberger led the Steelers to a solid campaign. They finished off as the top team of the NFC North, with a three game lead over the Ravens. Pittsburgh went 11-5 on the season.
Over the off-season it gives teams time to decide who they keep or cut from their team. It also gives players the chance to decide whether or not they are going to be continuing playing next season. Roethlisberger was likely among one of those players, after the Steelers brutal loss to New England.
Their New England game was a harsh reality check. It appears that Roethlisberger is not going to let that game end his career. After putting some hard thought into it, it looks like he will be coming back.
How many more seasons could Ben Roethlisberger play? Can the Steelers have back to back playoff seasons? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
