Arkansas authorities said that on Wednesday a 4-year-old girl fell out of a moving bus onto the middle of a busy highway. The horrifying incident was caught on video. The video shows the back door of the bus opening and the young girl falling out then hitting the road in Harrison, Arkansas, reports ABC News.
Ryan Ciampoli, a trained medical technician, was driving directly behind the bus when the little girl fell out. Ciampoli told local media that he could not believe what he was seeing. It was so shocking. His vehicle is fitted with a dash cam and caught the entire incident on video.
Ciampoli immediately pulled his car over and ran to the little girl. When Ciampoli got to the child, she was unconscious following a brief moment when she asked, “Where is my mommy?” He said he cradled her in his arms and talked softly to her until she regained consciousness.
After picking her up off the hot pavement he carried her off the busy highway and waited for emergency medical services to arrive. He said in most instances you wouldn’t want to move an injured person, but the girl was in grave danger lying in the middle of a highway so he had no other choice.
The 4-year-old was rushed to a local hospital where she was reunited with her family. She was then flown to Mercy Hospital’s trauma center. She suffered a broken jaw and will need surgery.
Paul Woodruff, the chief of the Harrison Police Department, said the only adult on the church-owned bus was the driver. The bus was taking children either to or from church, reports New York Daily News.
Arkansas authorities spoke to the other children on the bus, who said the 4-year-old walked to the rear of the bus, pulled on the latch, the door opened, and she fell out. The children told the driver and he pulled off the road.
The bus driver called 911, but bystanders and Ciampoli had already notified the police. By the time the bus driver called for help emergency responders were already on the scene, reports KTLA. The bus driver remained on the bus with the other children.
Arkansas authorities say that no charges will be brought against the bus driver. Woodruff said the ordeal was just a tragic accident.
