Blood Falls is a true oddity. It is a waterfall that bursts from the Taylor Glacier located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica. The water coming from the falls has a dark red hue. It was discovered by Griffith Taylor, a geologist back in 1911.
It was initially believed by scientists that the Blood Falls got its red hue from algae that lived in the water. Those beliefs changed in 2003 when a group of researchers concluded that the Blood Falls red hue was created by iron oxide and that the iron oxide most likely came from what remains of a 5 million-year-old ancient salt-water lake, reports the Business Insider.
A new study conducted on the phenomenon now points to the red-hued water continually flowing due to a rare hydraulic system that researchers believe has been flowing for millions of years now.
Researchers state that water releases energy in the form of heat as it freezes. This heat is enough to melt ice in the surrounding area, liquefying it. This process creates the water that flows through the Blood Falls.
The latest study was conducted by the University of Alaska Fairbanks and Colorado College. Researchers used an echolocation technology to view water flowing under Taylor Glacier.
Christina Carr the co-author of the new study says that they moved an antenna around the ice sheet in a pattern similar to a grid. This allowed them to “see” what was beneath them deep in the ice. It works in the same way a bat uses echolocation to “see” what is around it, reports AOL.
Carr said they were shocked to discover that the lake was not frozen despite being entombed in ice for millions of years. This discovery proved that the Blood Falls and the glacier itself had its own unique water system.
Carr explains that water releases heat as it freezes then it heats the surrounding ice and this keeps a constant flow of red hue water running through Blood Falls. Thanks to the million-year-old pool of water should supply “blood” to the falls for many years to come.
The Blood Falls is just one of many mysteries in the Antarctic. Those mysterious have sparked several conspiracy theories.
Antarctic is only inhabited by scientific researchers and penguins because of its freezing temperatures, reports The Sun.
Many “truthers” believe that deep within the ice of the Antarctic is a frozen over secret city. Some believe it is the Lost City of Atlantis.
