The Buffalo Bills may need to change something about their team soon. One of those changes just happened. It remains to be seen if it is a change for the better.
Doug Whaley will no longer be the Bills General Manager. His career may not be over, but his career with the Bills has come to an end. Buffalo did not part ways with Whaley in the best way either. He really did not have a choice.
The Buffalo Bills made the tough decision to fire him as their GM, according to ESPN. Bills co-owner Terry Pegula released a statement saying that after the ownership completed a full review of football operations over the last several months, both he and Kim informed Whaley this morning that the Bills have made the decision to move in a new direction.
Buffalo may have the hope of that new direction will result in wins. He continued to say that the Pegula’s have enjoyed working with Whaley. As a person, he is good, and the franchise thanks him for his commitment and work with the team. The decision was not easy but it had to be made and Terry Pegula feels it is the right one for the Buffalo Bills future.
There are many things that could have played factor. Under his management the Bills did not have a lot of success. There was no Super Bowl victory behind Whaley to say the least. With Whaley serving as their GM through four seasons, the Bills were a losing team, going 30-34.
There was only one winning season out of those four years. That season occurred in 2014 for the Bills when they went 9-7. Unfortunately winning nine games was not enough to take Buffalo to the playoffs.
As of late, there have not been many playoff appearances at all by the Bills. Their playoff drought extended to 17 seasons in 2016. Buffalo may be hoping to change that up when it comes to their 2017 campaign. Whaley will not be apart of the Bills team doing that.
Now the Bills will have a tough quest that they will have to tackle and soon. It will be a busy off-season for Buffalo as they will have to begin their search for a new General Manager. Buffalo’s search is beginning immediately.
Whaley is not the only firing in recent months by the Bills. They fired coach Rex Ryan in December. Whaley had taken over the team’s search for a coach. It seems like the Bills are having a huge change in course.
There will be many new faces on their team next year. One of them will be their new coach, Sean McDermott. Buffalo signed McDermott in January. Buffalo is hoping he can provide them with a winning season, something their coaches have struggled doing. Last season the Bills wrapped up with a losing record, going 7-9 as the third place team of the AFC East.
Can the Buffalo Bills have a winning season next year? Who will be a likely candidate to be Buffalo’s next GM? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
