Death’s Mistress (Tor/Forge) by fantasy author, Terry Goodkind, is an excellent novel by the renowned New York Times bestselling author, the start of a new series, a Lord Richard Rahl novel without Lord Rahl as the main character. Instead, Death’s Mistress features the villain-turned-heroine, the Sister of Darkness, Nicci, who once served Emperor Jagang, but now serves Richard Rahl. The novel is the start of the new series, Sister of Darkness: The Nicci Chronicles. And, two lucky readers of this post from either the United States or Canada will win a hardback copy of this epic novel, thanks to Terry Goodkind, CDA News, and the good people at Tor/Forge, the publishers of this book! As Death’s Mistress opens, readers learn that the blonde-haired and beautiful, but extremely deadly, Nicci is on a quest with the prophet and wizard, Nathan, to scout the far reaches of Richard Rahl’s empire and carry forth the news about Rahl and his wife, Kahlan, being the rulers of the empire, after the Emperor Jagang’s defeat. It is a changed world that the pair wind up exploring, with the very stars in the skies altered, and the ability of prophets to issue accurate prophecies drastically reduced, if not eliminated.
These changes, among other things, have caused the prophet and wizard Nathan to start to age, like normal humans. He has lived for over a thousand years, and has experienced and been a part of many important historical events, yet now must face the fact that he is mortal, like everyone else.
The duo journey to the forest where the powerful witch, Red, lives, a witch who has played an important role in the Richard Rahl novels by Terry Goodkind. She is perhaps even deadlier than Death’s Mistress, Nicci, and not a person to meet lightly, as the land around her house is littered with the skulls of those she has killed. Nathan has a request to make of her, though, so they travel to Red’s abode.
Nathan asks Red to make him a Book of Life, filled with his entire history and the deeds he has accomplished. Red agrees to Nathan’s request, and the book composes itself. The book is written using Nathan’s blood, after Red slashes the back of his hand with a knife.
Nathan asks to be given the book, but Red refuses, telling him she only agreed to make him one, not to then give it to him. She keeps the book, storing it along with countless others she has had written for other people who came before Nicci and Nathan.
However, Red gives something to Nathan she tells him is perhaps far more valuable: a new, mostly blank, Book of Life, for his adventures yet to come. The book is not entirely blank, though…on the book’s second page, there is the news that the duo must now travel to a place in the Old World, called Kol Adair, to save the entire world, and for the Wizard to “behold what he needs to make himself whole again.” There are also words for Nicci that follow: “And the Sorceress must save the world.”
Journeying to Kol Adair becomes their new quest, and informing everyone about Lord Richard Rahl, along the way. Death’s Mistress details the quest of the pair and the adventures they have while traveling to Kol Adair. They pick up a rather unlikely travel companion along the way, a former cabbage farmer who decided to leave behind farming and experience life and adventures aboard a ship.
Death’s Mistress by Terry Goodkind is chock full of action, adventure, magic and bloody good fun, with Nicci providing much of each, creatively slaying anyone who dares to cross her or her friends. It marks another new series by Goodkind, set in the world of the Sword of Truth, and once again, displays the author’s immense skills at world-building and creating believable, three-dimensional characters.
