According to the Nigeria Police Force, Borno State has a new hero. Victor Isuka, a spokesperson for the police force shares that a dog saved dozens of lives at a wedding in Maiduguri. The wedding venue was targeted then attacked by a suicide bomber.
Isuka states that the dog showed true heroism when he stopped the suicide bomber, who was a teenager, from getting to the crowd and detonating the explosives she had with her, reports the National Post.
The hero dog belonged to an individual who lived in the neighborhood near the wedding venue. Isuka shares that the teen suicide bomber was on her way inside the wedding venue where guests were gathering, however, she did not reach her destination because the hero dog stopped her.
Sadly, the brave dog lost its life when the girl detonated the explosives as she struggled to free herself from the dog’s grip. Both the dog and teen suicide bomber died.
According to Isuku the tragic incident took place around 7:30 a.m. in the community of Belbelo, reports the Daily Post. Officials in Belbelo have not said if the hero dog was trained in bomb detection. Usually, dogs owned by civilians are not trained to detect bombs.
Buba Ahmed, who lives not far from the wedding venue, told local media that everyone at the wedding was extremely grateful to the dog for sacrificing its life to save all of theirs, reports WKSU.
Isuku adds that the shocked community has returned to normal and no other casualties other than the suicide bomber and brave dog were reported.
The incident in Belbelo took place not long after three suicide bombers blew themselves up at two separate locations. Both incidents were not far from where the wedding was held.
A major offensive against the terrorists Boko Haram has been launched in Nigeria by the military. Their effort has managed to roll back Boko Haram’s territory in the north part of the country.
Nigeria’s militant Islamist group known as Boko Haram has wreaked havoc all across Africa. The Boko Haram pushes a version of Islam which becomes “haram,” or forbidden, for Muslims to be politically or socially active.
Forbidden things include voting, wearing trousers or shirts or taking part in any type of social activity. Boko Haram sees Nigeria as an area run by non-believers even if its leader is of the Muslim faith.
