When it was announced that Joss Whedon was in the running to helm the upcoming Batgirl film, there was plenty of excitement in terms of both the movie itself and its potential director. Once it was confirmed that Whedon would in fact be leading the film, attention shifted to figuring out exactly what story might be told and even who would take on the titular role.
According to a report from IGN, it would seem that Joss Whedon has been putting a lot of thought into who could take on the role of Batgirl in the solo movie. During a recent interview, the director was asked about shifting from the Marvel Cinematic Universe over to the DC Extended Universe in order to make this movie and who he wanted to see bring the superhero to life in his project.
For Whedon, it would seem that the process of casting for Batgirl is all about finding just the right person and based on what the director had to say it seems as if whoever takes on the leading role will end up not being a big name star. While over the years there have been many big names cast in the role of comic book heroes, particularly in the movies, it looks like Batgirl could end up being someone relatively new to the entertainment scene.
Joss Whedon made it clear that right now he does not have his eye on anyone in particular to take on the role. Right now he is working on creating who this character is and he is currently in a dialogue with her and from there it will be about seeing who ends up joining up with the project. However, he said that he does not believe that the actress who takes on Batgirl will “be a name.” The director said that he believes that this is a case of going out to find the character and then getting to cast her.
As Joss Whedon pointed out that he is not against using an established movie star, saying that they are great, however, the actress who is going to don the costume has to be just right, and situations like this, Batgirl carries a lot of weight, so it’s not as critical to have a big star playing her to carry her story. While this is not to say that there are not plenty of famous people who could take on the part and do the role justice, it seems as if whoever signs on will be a new comer to the scene who will bring a freshness to the role.
