Marvel has a new series heading to Freeform and this means new superheroes heading to television. In the first trailer released for the upcoming Cloak & Dagger series, audiences get their first look at not just the newest superheroes, but teenagers whose story is more in line with an angst-filled teen drama than any previous Marvel series can boast.
Simply from the brief trailer of the series that has been released it is quite clear that this show is going to be a departure from the standard fare that Marvel has been offering up to their TV audiences. In fact, the Cloak & Dagger trailer offers a look at a series that has a completely different tone and feel from other Marvel properties.
While it is quite clear that this is a Marvel property (for those unfamiliar with the comic origins of the leading superheroes of the show) from the Roxxon Corp. sign that appears in the video, there is a lot more originality in comparison to shows like Jessica Jones or Luke Cage. Whereas those shows are more adult-centric and even relatively dark in terms of the material offered, Cloak & Dagger is clearly more geared towards young adults and teenagers, while still appealing to adults who may have enjoyed the original comics.
Based on the trailer it does seem as if the series will try to stick close to the source material in some ways, even as it forges its own path as a TV show. Tyrone Johnson, also known as Cloak, is played by Aubrey Joseph, who is more powerful than even he seems aware of in the trailer. Then there is Tandy Bowen, also known as Dagger, who is played by Olivia Holt and who seems drawn to Tyrone, even before learning about his abilities.
Up first is Cloak who is able to make portals and teleport, while also sending people into a dark dimension. Then there is Dagger, who is actually able to manipulate light and turn it into daggers.
While some might consider it their abilities that bring them together, their relationship seems to develop within the confines of the trailer in a more natural way than that. Whether it is the first initial meeting when they come across each other, or later on when Tandy realizes that Tyrone is the boy with the gifts, the trailer for Cloak & Dagger seems to show off a series that will develop more than just a superhero working relationship, but also a friendship and a much deeper bond, even as they are still merely teenagers. Although the series does not arrive on Freeform until 2018, it certainly looks like a fresh approach to the superhero genre.
