Could it really be possible that the Adult Swim cartoon, the popular series, Rick and Morty, might be behind McDonald’s considering a revival of their discontinued 1998 Szechuan McNugget sauce? Yes, it is largely due to a surprise episode of Rick and Morty that aired without fanfare or prior announcement on April 1 that McDonald’s might possibly bring back the Szechuan McNugget sauce that the fast food giant originally introduced in its restaurants as a tie-in to the release of Disney’s Mulan.
USA Today reported that in the April 1 surprise episode of Rick and Morty on Adult Swim, titled The Rickshank Rickdemption, time-traveling scientist Rick Sanchez revealed “that his sole motivation in life is “finding that McNugget sauce.” Sanchez is Jonesing for some of the Szechuan McNugget sauce so badly, he does not care if he has to wait “Nine more seasons,” or “97 more years” until he gets to taste some of it once again.
According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, in the premiere episode of this season’s Rick and Morty series on Adult Swim, mad scientist Rick Sanchez “has a flashback in which he goes to a McDonald’s drive-through to order the sauce.”
The cartoon character, whose time-traveling antics have drawn multitudes of fans to watch and fall in love with Adult Swim’s Rick and Morty, and human fans of McDonald’s Szechuan McNugget sauce might not have to wait much longer before they get their wish and get to experience the taste of the dipping sauce again, far less than the “97 more years,” Rick believes he must wait until it is reintroduced. Having the crave-worthy McNugget sauce highlighted in an episode of Rick and Morty, reminding fans of the sauce about how delicious it tasted, has come to the attention of the powers-that-be at McDonald’s, who are at least considering reintroducing the delectable dipping sauce.
Maybe, just maybe, McDonald’s will release the Szechuan McNugget sauce in 2018, to coincide with the live-action Mulan movie that will come out then. Rick and Morty fans have been taking a very pro-active approach, not only are they watching videos about how to make the sauce, they are also tweeting, asking McDonald’s to consider putting the dip back to the menu.
McDonald’s spokesman, Terri Hickey, said the company never says never because they listen when their customers speak. Whether or not McDonald’s decides to reintroduce their Szechuan McNugget sauce, corporate McDonald’s chef Mike Haracz said on Twitter, “I’ll see what I can do about sharing the recipe.”
McDonald’s Szechuan McNugget sauce still has a major following, despite the fact it was first introduced “nearly two decades ago.” On eBay, old containers of McDonald’s Szechuan sauce, regardless of whether they are open and closed, are seeing bid go up to hundreds of dollars. Even a photograph of the sauce is fetching high amounts, in the $100 range. Also, following the April 1 premiere of Rick and Morty, online retailers, have started to sell shirts with the saying “Bring Back Szechuan McNugget Sauce.”
Will Rick Sanchez’s quest, as revealed in the April 1 episode of Rick and Morty, to experience the taste, once again, of McDonald’s Szechuan McNugget sauce be satisfied in the near future, or will he be doomed to waiting for 97 years before he can indulge in it again?
