Perhaps one of the most dependable dramas on CBS at this time is Elementary, which has seen itself ignored for the most part throughout the network’s upfronts. Instead of discussing the possibility of the show’s future, CBS has been focusing on many of its other shows and issuing cancellations and renewals at a frenzied pace. For many fans, this lack of attention for their show over the past few months has been a very concerning situation, as many believed this meant the series was headed towards cancellation.
However, it looks like Elementary fans can now breathe easier as Cinema Blend is reporting that CBS has chosen to renew the series for a sixth season. While the network may have chosen to ax another one of its series, it looks like Sherlock is sticking around at least one more year.
Although CBS is known to enjoy giving praise to its series that tend to stomp their competition in the ratings, the network has been surprisingly silent in terms of Elementary. It was this silence that really had fans worrying that the future did not look good for another season. Over the years, the series has seen its ratings decline on a rather consistent basis and sadly it only brings in about half the viewers that it did in its first and second seasons. However, even with the lower ratings, the series continues to be praised by fans, which is certainly not typical of shows that have been on the air for five years.
Even with Elementary being the lowest-rated script series to earn a renewal from CBS, there are a few reasons the network decided to bring it back for a sixth season. Not only do the fans still praise the material and overall content of the show, but it is also a big success for the network on the international front as well.
Although star Lucy Liu has signed on as a guest star for another new series, it looks like this did not end up hurting the future of Elementary, for which fans can certainly be happy. Instead, it seems as if CBS is hopeful that the series can continue to bring in viewers looking for more adventures of Sherlock and Watson and perhaps even gain back some of their lost viewers when the series returns for its sixth season. The season finale airs on May 21 and fans can tune in knowing that it is not the end of their show, but simply a summer break.
