On Sunday, musical artist Drake beat Adele’s record by taking home 13 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) during the 2017 Billboard Music Awards held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Adele’s previous record, set back in 2012, had been 12 in one night. Drake won 10 of his BBMAs in the award show’s pre-telecast categories.
According to Billboard, Drake also wowed the audience with an amazing performance during the BBMAs. He sang Gyalchester, while standing in the center of the fountain outside the Bellagio, with water cascading down around him.
One of Drake’s awards he won during the BBMAs was when his latest album, Views, won the award for Top Billboard 200 Album. During his acceptance speech, Drake reportedly hit on the show’s co-host, Vanessa Hudgens. He told her that she looked “incredible.” She shared hosting duties with Ludacris.
Earlier in the BBMAs, Drake had won an award for Top Male Artist. Beyoncé won the BBMA for Top Female Artist. At the end of the BBMAs, Drake racked up his 13th award when he won the last award given of the night, the BBMA for Top Artist.
Michael Jackson’s son, Prince Jackson, presented the award to Drake, according to the Washington Post. Views was one of the hottest albums of 2016, thanks in large part to the huge hit single featuring Kyla and WizKid, One Dance.
Other musical artists who were up for the BBMA for Top Artist were the Chainsmokers, Beyonce, Shawn Mendes, Justin Bieber, twenty one pilots, Rihanna, the Weeknd, Ariana Grande and Adele.
One of the other BBMAs that Drake earned on Sunday night was for Top Rap Artist. Other BBMAs Drake took home included the BBMAs for Top Song Sales Artist, Top Streaming Song (Audio) for One Dance, Top Streaming Artist, Top R&B Song for One Dance, Top Rap Album for Views, Top Rap Tour and Top R&B Collaboration for One Dance.
One of the other big moments during the 2017 BBMAs was when Cher, at age 71, won the Icon Award. She also performed twice, singing two of her biggest hits, Believe, and If I Could Turn Back Time.
Drake proved he is one of the hottest musical artists of the decade, breaking Adele’s record of winning 12 BBMAs when he won 13 on Sunday, May 21. By winning 13 BBMAs, Drake became one of the top 10 musical artists who have won the most BBMAs. Taylor swift still leads the pack, with 21 wins. Drake might eventually catch up and may possibly surpass Swift one day, possibly even next year, as his latest release, More Life, from March, is already breaking records he set in 2016 with Views.
