For the last 13 seasons, ABC has had Grey’s Anatomy acting as a major success for the network. Even with the show’s expected ups and downs, the series has continued to bring in viewers, both old and new. Now, it looks like ABC is hoping to once more strike gold with Grey’s Anatomy when they move forward with a new spin-off of the series.
While this will not be the first spin-off for the show, it will definitely be going in a different direction from its predecessor and even the first series that spun off, Private Practice. As Cinema Blend is reporting, there is currently no name for the new series, however, ABC has apparently ordered the Grey’s Anatomy spin-off straight to series already.
The new series will follow the lives of firefighters who are working in Seattle and who will have a connection to the hospital. Following the lives of one Seattle firehouse, the show will focus on the brave women and men who run into the fires every day as they try to balance both their work lives and duty with their personal lives and love. Characters in the series will range between the new recruits and the veteran captain and viewers will get to watch as they work against odds that may seem impossible to everyone else. In this regard, the series is much like Grey’s Anatomy, but instead of focusing on the hospital and doctors who work there, this series will be about the firehouse and its firefighters.
With its straight to series order, ABC is showing a lot of faith in a show that does not even have a title yet. Of course, it is also not surprising to see the series having so much support from the network since it hails from Shonda Rhimes, who is not only the woman behind Grey’s Anatomy, but is also behind any number of other big successes for the network, including Scandal and How to Get Away With Murder.
The straight to series order is not only good news for this new series, but also for Grey’s Anatomy as it will potentially give both shows a nice boost. In order to introduce the spin-off, viewers will meet the characters from the firehouse in a season 14 episode of Grey’s, which will act as the back door pilot for the series. Since the show has already been picked up for its first season, there is a lot of hope that the introduction will end up going smoothly because the show is already guaranteed and there will not be the added pressure of hoping the pilot is enough to get a pick up order.
