It was a Sign of the Times changing when One Direction’s Harry Styles finally released his first debut single which quickly climbed the charts in both the UK and the US, but now the debut single has been followed up by a debut album that gives listeners a raw yet refined sound of what defines the 23-year-old as an artist. In his self-titled freshman album, the boy band member isn’t just a boy anymore.
Since One Direction has been on its hiatus, we have got a taste of music from Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson. Liam Payne is set to drop his solo single and video on May 19th but the most anticipated solo sound that 1D fans have been waiting for is that of Harry Styles. The singer, along with, Zayn, always took the lead vocals on group pieces but as we know in a group it’s really hard to find your individuality and express it with four other people on the song. Styles’ style has always been compared to Mick Jagger, Elton John, and even a little bit on Jim Morrison; however, as you can hear on Sign of the Times, the artist showed us anything but.
Harry Styles surpassed predictability and if it has to be compared to another artist it gives a very similar vibe and structure of a Pink Floyd song. The new album is actually very original, mature, and most importantly – different. According to Billboard, the rock star does the opposite of what is expected of him. There are no Diplo produced beats, popular guest verses, or even lengthy mid-song breakdowns. There is however pure vocal talent, trance like counterparts, and smooth transitions according to Hollywood Life.
The promo tour has already begun to get offer fans live performances of the new Harry Styles wave. It started with a performance of Sign of the Times on Saturday Night Live, followed by Carolina on the Today show and now the artist is back in his home country making appearances on radio shows. There’s already been speculation that one of the songs, Two Ghosts to be exact, is about his short romance with Taylor Swift. Harry Styles is also calling a mystery girl out on his song Kiwi that discusses a girl who cries wolf to the tabloids. Wonder who that is?
Some fans are ecstatic and others absolutely hate it, as expected. Which side are you on? Let us know in the comment section below!
