Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has already cemented itself as a massive success after just two weekends at the box office, but that does not mean that there were not some mistakes made and one in particular James Gunn addressed at a question and answer session held on May 14. While answering fans’ questions, the director opened up about one moment in the movie that was as much fun as it was a mistake that was left in the film.
As Cinema Blend points out Stan Lee made his requisite cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but for fans paying attention, there is something that he says that does not necessarily make sense in terms of the timeline of the movie in terms of the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When James Gunn discussed that cameo he said that something he found both funny and interesting is that so many fans believe that Stan Lee is actually a Watcher within the MCU and that his cameos are him actually acting as a Watcher. The director found it funny to think of Stan Lee being this guy working for the Watchers, as well as something fun for the MCU as a whole.
However, James Gunn admits this led to his mistake in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. In fact, he said he has no problem owning up to this mistake because he knows that in theory the movie takes place in 2014 and prior to Infinity War, as well as Captain America: Civil War which takes place in 2016. James Gunn knows that when Stan Lee is telling the other apparent Watchers about that time he was a Fed-Ex guy during his cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, he is actually referring to what he was in his Civil War cameo. The director simply said he knows he screwed up and was not really thinking about it in terms of the overall timeline. However, he did say, “that probably Stan Lee used the guise of a Fed Ex guy more than one time.”
While this mistake is certainly something small and can be explained in any number of ways, it is interesting to have James Gunn admit that he made a mistake with that seemingly throw away line from Stan Lee. However, as some fans have also pointed out it is entirely possible that as a Watcher, Stan Lee could be able to jump through time and space, which would make sense in terms of his being a part of Guardians of the Galaxy on some random planet discussing his different adventures anyway. Either way, it looks like this is one of those small moments that fans will continue to point out and James Gunn himself admits was a mistake that got left in the final movie.
What do you think of the director saying this moment was a mistake he was not thinking about? Do you think it solidifies the fan theory that Stan Lee is a Watcher in the MCU? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
