Now that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has officially hit theaters and been the number one movie at the box office for two weekends in a row, many fans have questions. One big question that was posed to director James Gunn was why in the movie, Ego, played by Kurt Russell, who also happens to be a celestial being appears as a human when visiting other planets. Ego is a new character for the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel and one with a very interesting back story, especially in regards to Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt.
According to a report from Comicbook.com, during a question and answer session that James Gunn took part in on May 14, he was asked by a fan, “Why did Ego look human in the interactions he had with the other species he was to impregnate,” especially since it would seem more likely that he would take the shape of whatever species he was attempting to copulate with. The question refers to the moment when Ego is explaining his grand plan to Peter and explaining how he went about trying to essentially create another celestial being like himself. In answer to the question, Gunn immediately replied with a “Yes! And I believe he did.”
In his response, James Gunn explained that all of this gets rather complicated and in-depth. The director’s belief is that when Ego is showing him the statues that depict his travels to other planets they are for Peter and not necessarily an entirely accurate depiction of events. For example, when audiences see Ego kissing a turtle-like creature in the background, James Gunn believes that Ego was in fact in the form of one of those turtle-like creatures. However, for the sake of telling the story to Peter, as well as showing the audience themselves, in those situations Ego is not shown as the creatures he is engaging with, but rather as the human he presents himself as to Peter.
Clearly a lot of thought went into the moment in which Ego explains his grand plan to Peter, right down to the animated statues which are a depiction of the character’s history leading up to his meeting Peter’s mother. While it comes as no surprise that fans have questions about different aspects of the movie, this was clearly an interesting moment in the movie that really caught people’s attention. With James Gunn’s explanation it also becomes clear that even these smaller details were thought through in a way that would make sense not only to the story, but also to audiences.
What do you think of the director’s explanation? Do you think it makes sense in terms of the story told in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Tell us what you think in the comments below.
