Tears were shed on a recent JetBlue flight at the Kennedy Airport. The latest airline controversy surrounds a New Jersey family and a birthday cake.
Minta Burke says that her family was kicked off the JetBlue flight because they brought a birthday cake onto the plane. She says that she and her family were so happy when they boarded the plan and were looking forward to arriving in Las Vegas. Burke says soon after boarding the family was kicked off the plane and her children were left crying and confused. She went on to say the incident traumatized her children, reports WGN-TV.
Burke says that the trip was a birthday gift, which was booked by her husband, Cameron. He said once they boarded the plane his family got a surprise, but it was not the good one that he had planned.
A video of the incident has been shared on several social media sites. In the video, one of the Burke’s sons can be heard crying. He can be heard saying that they did everything they were told and that they had done nothing wrong.
JetBlue disagrees and says that bringing the birthday cake aboard the flight was a security risk. The cake was put into the overhead bin when the Burke’s boarded the plane. Cameron states that he was told by a flight attendant that he had to move the cake and he states that he did as he was asked. Cameron then placed the cake under his seat. Cameron then adds that the situation quickly escalated when a second flight attendant verbally confronted the first flight attendant about what was going on between her and the Burke family, reports ABC 7.
Cameron says the heated discussion that took place between the two flight attendants was “not pretty.” Cameron Burke says he approached the two flight attendants and told them he’d moved the cake and everything was fine. The second flight attendant then told him that their discussion did not “involve you.” The second flight attendant then told Cameron that he had been “non-compliant” to the first flight attendants instructions.
Cameron said the flight attendant’s behavior seemed off and he asked her if she had been drinking. Soon after police were brought onto the JetBlue flight. Soon after they boarded an announcement was made stating that everyone had to get off the plane. In the video, other passengers can be seen siding with the Burke family.
JetBlue has released a statement on the incident claiming that the Burke family had refused multiple requests by a flight attendant to remove the cake. The statement goes on to say that the family became agitated and began cursing and screaming at the crew as well as made false accusations about a staff member’s fitness to fly.
Cameron states that the other passengers were understanding about the situation and that they all knew what was taking place was a very strange situation. Cameron adds that he nor any member of his family cursed or even raised their voices. He adds that at no point during the conversation with the two flight attendants was the family informed they were being kicked off the flight, reports the Independent.
The family adds that after getting off the JetBlue flight they were immediately refunded at the terminal, which they say just adds to their story that what happened on the flight does not add up.
