Tonight Show‘s host Jimmy Fallon is finally breaking his silence on one innocent action that upset a lot of people around eight months ago: the infamous Donald Trump hair ruffle. The comedian explains his intentions and reaction to all of the backlash that followed after the would be presidential election winner stopped by the talk show for a visit.
On September 15, 2017 Donald Trump made an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon after a long day of making, well, Donald Trump-like comments. The TV host made his interview lighthearted, as he does with everyone who stops by, asking some questions that was on his mind and allowing the guest to speak on a few subjects (without getting too politically correct). Fallon asked Trump about how his business background comes into play when running for president, among other things, and then asked if he could ruffle his hair to which Trump surprisingly allowed.
The playful tone, basic questions, and friendly hair ruffle didn’t go over well with viewers who took to social media to express how disappointed they were with Jimmy Fallon according to E! Online and it affected the comedian more than he showed. “If I let anyone down, it hurt my feelings that they didn’t like it. I got it,” he explains. Fallon said he is a people pleaser, and if someone posts even one negative thing about him on Twitter, it really upsets him. So, following the Trump hair ruffle, and posts started to hit Twitter, Fallon was devastated. He was just trying to have some fine. “I didn’t mean anything by it,” the host added in his interview with The New York Times. As far as the hair ruffle concerns Jimmy explained that he didn’t do it to humanize Donald Trump, he thought it would actually minimize him.
It’s understandable why viewers would be upset that the Saturday Night Live veteran didn’t ask more relevant questions. However, viewers should keep in mind the kind of host Jimmy Fallon is, more importantly what kind of talk show it is. Yes, viewers can be both entertained and get down to the nitty gritty when it comes to controversial politicians, but on The Tonight Show it is all about having fun. It is the same format that started Lip Sync Battle, Thank You Notes, and Ew — it has never been a heavy show. More importantly, Jimmy Fallon has never voiced in support of Trump and he’s done more impressions of the president than Alec Baldwin on SNL. He meant no harm. Even with the hair ruffle, it seemed like the situation was more of a classic Fallon move that also showed Jimmy doing what people across the nation may have wanted to do so long.
On top of the constant lighthearted tone of the show, the viewers have to remember that people who are pro-Trump also watch and although as a host, one may not agree with their audience, and they cannot afford to alienate their audience.
