Lonzo Ball is approaching his pre-draft workouts with strategy. He will not workout with just any team. The Boston Celtics are the latest team to find that out. He may not have any plans on joining the Celtics anytime soon.
On Thursday the Boston Celtics were hit with the minor setback that Ball would not be working out with the team, according to ESPN. Ball’s camp notified the Celtics that he would not be participating. Celtics’ President of basketball operations Danny Ainge confirmed the news.
With the Celtics having the No. 1 draft pick in their hands, it is an odd scenario for a player to not show up for a workout. Boston has drafted players that did not work out with them in the past. Lonzo Ball joining Boston’s teams still seems unlikely.
Ball’s camp has a certain team in mind, and it is not the Boston Celtics. Ball’s father has said in the past that they are aiming to grab the interest of the Lakers. They are the only team that Ball will be seen working out for.
Earlier this month, LeVar Ball said, “That’s all we working out for is the Lakers.” He continued to emphasize that they are only interested in the Lakers. There is no other team that, in their ming, they need to work out for. He may not have a team yet but one thing Ball does have is his priorities set straight.
Overall Ball is a versatile player, he can play any position. His craft is as a point guard. For the Lakers, a point guard could for fulfill one of their needs. He does not want to be with the best team in the league, he wants to play for the Lakers.
Los Angeles has been far from perfect, and far from a top team. They have struggled. Even with Kobe Bryant active two seasons ago the Lakers were not winning team. Now that Bryant is retired from the game Los Angeles is still in the early stages of rebuilding mode.
The Lakers are still trying to discover their new identity because it no longer involves Bryant. He can not aid them on the court anymore. As of now the Lakers are still a work in progress. They have not made any substantial transformation.
Last season is evidence of the Lakers systematic struggles. There was not playoff appearance by Los Angeles. They failed to reach postseason play, and by a few steps, the Lakers were not even a winning team. Los Angeles lost the second-most teams of the Western Conference as they capped off the year with a record of 26-56.
The only team that trailed Los Angeles was the Suns, who went just 24-58. Los Angeles won 41 fewer games than the conferencing clinching Golden State Warriors. Last season marked the Lakers third in a row in which they fell 14th place.
Ball is interested in the Lakers, but are they interested in him? Will Ball workout with any other team down the road? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
