On Thursday, Aquaman (Warner Bros.) director, James Wan, 40, released two new photos of actress Amber Heard, 32, as Mera, the Queen of Atlantis, and the love interest of Aquaman, played by Jason Momoa. Heard will appear as Queen Mera first in the movie, Justice League, due out this coming fall, on November 10, 2017, before she reprises the role in Aquaman, scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2018.
According to EW.com, one of the photos, taken by Jasin Boland, showed Heard as Mera in Aquaman wearing a body-hugging costume covered with green, metallic-looking scales. Wan captioned the photo with the description that it depicted Queen Mera “swept in from the sea.” The director added it was taken on Heard’s first day on the set.
The other photo Wan released on social media, just a few hours later, showed her in a photo that was similar, but Heard’s body suit looks purplish because of the lighting, and the photo is shot from a different angle. The photo looks like it was taken “on a docks of a harbor.”
According to E! Online, Heard also posted a photo of herself on Thursday morning, but not as Mera, Queen of Atlantis. The photo shows the actress on the first day of shooting for Aquaman on May 2, sitting in a makeup chair. She joked that the “moment” when she had the photo taken had been preceded by prepping for more than a year for the role, training to look the part for six months, and denying herself “pleasure,” in the form of “donuts.”
Heard has a different look in the photos that Wan shared with the public on social media than she does as Mera in photos of her from Justice League, shared last fall by director Zack Snyder. Of course, the Queen of Atlantis cannot wear the same outfit in two different movies — just because she lives under the sea does not mean that her closet in only home to one costume.
Director Wan waxed a bit philosophical in an interview from 2016 with Slash Film, in which he talked about Aquaman, and how most people have heard at least something about the comic book hero. Wan admitted he liked other superheros more as he was growing up, like the X-Men, Batman and Spider-Man. He said Aquaman was “cool,” though, adding that a couple of things he liked about Aquaman is that he is not some sort of alien from another planet, and that he is from a society humans are not very aware about, if at all.
Though it is still over a year from when Aquaman premieres on Dec. 21, 2018, and several months still until Justice League hits theaters in November, fan anticipation about the movie has been steadily building, and the photos of Amber Heard as Mera, the Queen of Atlantis, has helped to fuel further anticipation for the flick. Shooting for Aquaman, in Australia, is just now underway. Besides Amber Heard and Jason Momoa, who also plays Aquaman’s alter-ego, Arthur Curry, Aquaman’s cast will also include Dolph Lundgren, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Nicole Kidman, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Temuera Morrison.
