A 17-year-old high school student from North Carolina found himself in trouble with the law after an argument with his girlfriend turned into a physical assault in the parking lot of Garinger High School. When officers arrived on the scene they found the 17-year-old assaulting his 16-year-old girlfriend in the school’s parking lot. Police said they attempted to come between the teen and his victim so they could get the 16-year-old to safety, reports WCNC.
The officers attempt to separate the two resulted in the 17-year-old teen being shocked by a Taser not once, but twice because he attacked the responding officers. Some students who were in the school’s parking lot and witnessed the ordeal say that police went too far when they used a Taser on the 17-year-old. One student told reporters that the teen could have died from the officer’s actions. Most of the students who witnessed the incident stated that they were shocked that authorities made the decision to use a Taser, especially since they used it twice.
A spokesperson for the North Carolina police states that officers used the Taser twice and that did not stop the 17-year-old from assaulting his 16-year-old girlfriend. Several students told local media that they wished that North Carolina police had tried to have resolved the incident without using any type of weapon.
One student named Bishop said that had there been more officers responding to the incident the teen would not have been able to resist them and the situation then could have been resolved without the teen getting tased. Only two officers initially responded to the 911 call, reports FOX 4 Charlotte.
Authorities said because the teen was tased twice he was taken to the Carolinas Medical Center as a precaution. After being checked out at the hospital the North Carolina teen was taken into custody. Authorities say that the teen faces several different charges including two counts of assault on a police officer as well as resisting arrest.
The North Carolina teen nor his victim’s names have not been released because of their age. It is unclear what started the fight or if the 17-year-old teen had been violent with his girlfriend before, reports U.S. News.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools system in North Carolina has not replied to inquiries regarding the incident. It is unclear whether the 16-year-old victim sustained any type of injuries in the assault.
