Rob Gronkowski is saying goodbye to his old deal with the New England Patriots. He just received a new deal. The Patriots restructured his contract, and there could be a big pay-day ahead for Gronkowski.
After his contract was reconstructed for his 2017 season, the Patriots tight end could have a chance at being the highest-paid tight end in the entire NFL. One thing is for sure, there is a chance his salary will be raised. He could potentially boost his salary from this year of $5.25 million to $10.75 million, according to ESPN.
The incentives include $10.75 million in his first tier if he is either selected as an All-Pro or plays 90 percent of the regular season with 80 catches for 1,200 receiving yards. Receiving All-Pro recognition may not be a hard task for Rob Gronkowski to complete, he has done it four times in his career.
In his second tier, he will be set to make over $8 million if he can play 80 percent of the time, haul in 70 catches and 1,000 receiving yards, or reach the end zone at least 12 times. Lastly, in his third tier he will be paid $6.75 million if he reaches 70 percent playing time with 60 receptions for 800 yards or 10 visits to the end zone.
Gronkowski has had far from a healthy past couple of seasons. He has been unable to avoid injury. He had season ending surgery last year for New England. Despite a history of injury, the Patriots are willing to pay the price to Gronkowski under a few conditions.
In each of his past three seasons serving as the Patriots tight end, Gronkowski’s play time has been low. He is averaging just over 70 percent in 2014, 84 percent in 2015, and 31 percent in 2016. New England may be hoping he can start off next season in a fresh way.
Last season Gronkowski was unable to help out the Patriots during their playoff chase. Luckily, New England found a way to hold their own. They came back from a 25 point deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons and win the Super Bowl.
Despite a rocky start to their season as Brady served a four-game suspension, the Patriots did something few teams could have done. With Brady sidelined the Patriots went 3-1. In addition to that, the Patriots clinched the AFC East with a record of 14-2 on the season. They won the most games in the entire NFL.
After winning the Super Bowl, the Patriots revealed their plans going forward. They have the intention on bringing home another championship and soon. Brady himself promised fans for a sixth trophy. New England may be crossing their fingers that their tight end can help be a bigger part of that. When healthy, he is a major contributor for the Patriots.
