The San Antonio Spurs had a strong regular season for the second year in a row. They were not the first place team of the Western Conference, but they still had a good view. San Antonio was the next best thing, the second place team of the West.
The only team ahead of the Spurs was the Golden State Warriors, who clinched the West with a record of 67-15. After the Spurs capped off their 2016-17 campaign with a record of 61-21, their season was far from over. Being the second place team was more than enough for the Spurs to reach the playoffs.
So far through the postseason, they have looked like a similar team. They have been a winning team once again. Their first opponent, the Memphis Grizzlies proved to be no match to the Spurs. Entering the first round of the playoffs, the odd may have been against the Grizzlies.
Memphis was also a winning team this season, but they did not compare in numbers to the success of the Spurs. The Grizzlies ended their regular season with a record of 43-39, as the seventh place team of the Western Conference. They won 19 fewer games than San Antonio.
San Antonio took an early 2-0 lead in the series, blowing out the Grizzlies 111-82 in Game 1, and defeating them a second time in Game 2. It may have taken the Spurs a little longer than expected, but they were able to exit the series on a high note. It took them six games to do it, but the Spurs defeated Memphis 4-2.
The Spurs just ended their second round series in a similar way. Memphis would not be the only team to be blown out by the Spurs, the Houston Rockets were also. San Antonio did drop the first game of the round to Houston, suffering a 126-99 loss, but their trail in the series would be short-lived. After being left to 27 points unanswered for the Spurs went on to win four of their next five meets against Houston.
Yesterday the San Antonio Spurs completed their goal. In Game 6, they handed the Rockets a 114-75 loss, leaving the Rockets to 39 points unanswered for, according to FOX Sports. With their Game 6 win, the Spurs took the series 4-2, and successfully bought a ticket to the conference finals.
Houston’s season is now over. On the other hand, the Spurs will be heading to the next round, and the competition is about to take a challenging turn. They will be playing the Golden State Warriors, a team that has finished just ahead of the Spurs in their past few seasons.
Golden State had a record-setting 73 wins in their 15-16 season, as they clinched the West, and won 67 games in their 16-17 campaign. They have reached the NBA Finals in their past two seasons, winning a title once. They will be the Spurs next mission to complete. In two days the Spurs will be hosted by the Warriors in the first game of the series.
