Universal is kicking off a whole new world to explore starting with its release of Tom Cruises’ The Mummy. The new ‘Dark Universe’ franchise is slated to offer up both new and familiar faces, excellent writers, and known producers.
Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella has offered up a film that will take viewers on an enigmatic and thrilling adventure in The Mummy, but the appearance of Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll is what sent rumors that Universal was cooking up a new cinematic universe through the roof. Well it turns out the rumors were true and there has been an official ‘Universal Monsters’ announcement on what the studio is cooking up, already branded with the new ‘Dark Universe’ logo.
Up next, after The Mummy, we will be gifted with the story of everybody’s favorite monster bride (well, other than Lily Munster) in The Bride of Frankenstein. Apparently the movie giant is skipping completely past the story of Frankenstein which is kind of refreshing because that story has been told and retold so many times. The movie centering around the science-experiment-gone-wrong’s wife will be directed by Beauty and the Beast’s Bill Condon according to Entertainment Weekly.
The Bride of Frankenstein’s stars include Javier Bardem as Frankenstein’s monster, Johnny Depp as The Invisible Man, and Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll (and Mr. Hyde). Leaving the question of who will be cast as the bride herself. Although who will be the main actress will be announced soon, predictions are running rampant with A list names including Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, and Salma Hayek. Written by David Koepp , Bride of Frankenstein will be released on Valentine’s Day, 2019.
The Mummy will connect with the new movie as shown on the newly released poster that displays all the announced cast members that was dropped after the new logo was unveiled and theme music by Danny Elfman played. According to Forbes, Scarlet Johansson may star in the next rumored addition to the franchise in The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Dwayne Johnson could be up for another rumored franchise addition called The Wolfman.
The Dark Universe franchise could go a different route than Marvel and DC. Instead of focusing on sequels to franchised movies (i.e Avengers, Suicide Squad) they seem to be working on standalone films that intertwine and then possibly returning to work on part twos and threes. Hopefully in addition to focusing more on standalone films. the Dark Universe will use more fresh faces instead of the constant ‘Top 25’ actors that viewers see in every movie already.
