The Boston Celtics may not have a trophy in their hands, but they do have something else. Boston still has something valuable. They have the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft. Depending on how they use it, it could turn out to be a game changer for the Celtics.
They will have one of the first chances in the league at all available talent heading into the draft. If Boston approaches the draft with strategy it could be beneficial. This year the Celtics learned that they are incomplete.
The Celtics did have the credit of clinching the Eastern Conference, and even reaching the conference finals, but they still are far from perfect. The Celtics have room for improvement, and they are a work in progress. If they invest in young talent that they could build a future with in the draft, it could be beneficial long-term and next season.
This season the Celtics were not lucky enough to go the distance, but they are still lucky to have the top pick. Many teams that have the No. 1 pick lack salary, or are having deep struggles. Boston’s issues are visual for the most part.
It was revealed during the off-season particularly for the Celtics. When the Celtics did not play hard from the second the clock ran, the outcome was not good. On the other hand, when Boston opened up their games scoring and taking an early lead, it paid off on many occasions.
Taking an early lead, and maintaining is something the Celtics need to work on. In addition to that the Celtics need to work on rebounds. It is safe to safe the Celtics are not the kings of the three-point shot. They missed, and a lot of three-pointers.
Failing to land shots was not the most hurtful thing for the Celtics, failing to rebound after missing shots was. Boston did not position themselves well for rebounds. It came costly, especially in their Cavaliers series. If the Celtics did rebound the ball more, there could have been a large point difference in the game.
The good news is that the Celtics can fix these issues. It will require some time, effort, and maybe a few transactions and new faces to the team. There are three weeks remaining until the draft before the Boston Celtics can change that, according to True Jersey. If the Celtics can make their 16-17 off-season a big one, in the long-run it has the potential to be rewarding.
The Celtics may have been eliminated in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but there is still light at the end of the tunnel. They still were the first team to beat Cleveland in the postseason. In addition to that, they handed Cleveland a loss without the help of Isaiah Thomas. He fell to season-ending hip injury in the early stages of the series. One of Boston’s top priorities is getting Thomas into top shape for their upcoming season, and they have already started.
