The Boston Red Sox appear to have a new weapon, the walk-off hit. It has been working well for them. As of late, the Red Sox have been forced to work extra hard. In their past two games they went extra innings, and played a handful more innings than usual.
Their most recent opponent, the Philadelphia Phillies may not of visually appeared to be a tough opponent, but they were for the Red Sox. Philadelphia kept up with Boston, and responded for every run their scored. Heading into yesterday’s game, the Phillies were struggling.
Philadelphia is off to one of the coldest starts in the league. They sit all the way at the bottom of the standings of the NL East. They are a losing team by a long-shot. With a record of 20-42 on the year, they have a long way to go in order to flip their record.
Yesterday the Red Sox handed Philadelphia their 21st loss of the season. It also marked the Phillies seventh dropped game in a row. Andrew Benintendi of the Red Sox was the difference of the game.
Since joining the Red Sox, outfielder Andrew Benintendi has had a big impact. He can do much more than assist his team with his glove. He can assist them with offense. His most recent game was the living evidence.
Yesterday Benintendi helped decide the game sooner rather than later. He got the walk-off hit for the Boston Red Sox, helping them escape with a 4-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies in the 12th inning, according to the Boston Herald.
His single to right-field was all that prevented the Red Sox from going into 13 innings of baseball. Shortly after, he received a complimentary Gatorade bath via his teammates. It marked Boston’s second walk-off game in a row.
In their past five games, the Red Sox offense has been hot. They have outscored their opponents, 29-22. Boston has won four of their past five games. If they are trying to swipe the Yankees lead, they are heading in a promising direction. At the rate they are going, they just might be able to do it.
New York holds the first place slot of the AL East, with a record of 38-24. Their lead is not massive. As the Red Sox are the second place team, with a record of 36-28, Boston trails by just three games.
Tonight Boston will be aiming to cut New York’s lead to just a pair of games. They will be playing their third game in part of a four game series against the Phillies. Tonight, they will not be playing at home, they will be playing at Citizen’s Bank Park. Boston will be aiming for their third consecutive victory.
Can the Boston Red Sox cut New York’s lead? Will there be more walk-offs to come out of the Red Sox this week? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
