Human skeletal remains were found on Thursday evening, June 15, around 7 p.m. near where the annual Firefly Music Festival takes place just outside Dover, Delaware. A concert goers discovered the skeletal remains close to the venue in a wooded area just outside of Dover, the capital city of Delaware, near Marley Lane and east of Leipsic Road.
Billboard reported that the Firefly Music Festival is held every year in the summer on the Dover International Speedway grounds. Detectives went to the wooded area to investigate, and they confirmed that the remains were those of a human. The wooded area is located approximately a half a mile from the main entrance to the Firefly Music Festival.
According to LancasterOnline, the Firefly Music Festival takes place on 105 acres of land and lasts for four days. The human skeletal remains were discovered in the vicinity of a private area used for camping and parking.
Detectives contacted the Delaware Division of Forensic Science. They have also joined in and are assisting in discovering the identity of the human skeletal remains, what the cause of death was, and other pertinent facts involved in the case. There have not been further details reported in the ongoing investigation.
Attendance is reportedly down this year, compared to the same time last year, and the attendees, in general, have been younger, according to The News Journal. At least a part of the reason why attendance has been lower this year than in some previous ones likely has to do with a line-up that has been described as being underwhelming.
There are some big names at this year’s Firefly Music Festival, like The Weeknd, Bob Dylan, Weezer, Kesha, Chance the Rapper, Twenty One Pilots and Muse, there are not as many major musical acts as there were last year there, or at this year’s Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, held earlier this month, which had not only Chance the Rapper and The Weeknd, but also Red Hot Chili Peppers and U2.
The Firefly Music Festival is attended by roughly 90,000 people a year. Not many of the concertgoers asked seemed to realize that human skeletal remains had been discovered in the wooded area and that there was an ongoing investigation taking place by the police in Dover, Delaware.
The wooded area where the human skeletal remains were discovered is the property of Dover International Speedway. Two weeks ago, NASCAR fans camped close to the area where the remains were found.
First State Update reported that Director of Public Information Sergeant Richard D. Bratz said an investigation into the death of whoever the skeletal remains belonged to is being conducted by the Delaware State Police. State troopers are continuing to analyze and collect evidence discovered at the scene.
