Eric Decker has served as the New York Jets wide receiver for their past few seasons. That is going to be changing soon. At 30-years-old Decker is going to have to find a new team. He will not be playing for New York next season.
New York parted ways with the wide receiver. It may not come as a shocking move either. He is not coming off his best season. Last season he made just nine receptions for a total of 194 yards, and scored just two touchdowns.
Appearing in three games marked the first time of his career he played in less than 14 games. After running for over 900 yards in three consecutive seasons, that all changed in his 16-17 campaign. His career is not over, but with the Jets it is expected to be.
The Jets are now in search of a new wide receiver. They are not wasting any time. New York reportedly has somebody in particular on their mind, Steve Smith. There is one issue with Smith, he does not play anymore.
Smith has retired from football, but it did not stop the Jets. They still tried to recruit back to the football world. In search of a replacement, the Jets have turned their interest to the veteran receiver.
He has been contacted by the New York Jets already to see if he would have interest in playing next year according to NBC Sports. It may be a longshot for New York for a multitude of reasons. Smith has not played for the Jets, or even under Todd Bowles before.
The only connection between the Jets and Smith relates to quarterback Josh McCown. McCown played two years with Smith with the Carolina Panthers. Other than that, there are not any ways to link the two sides.
New York may of already found out bad news for their bid at Smith. He reportedly indicated that he was not interested in playing. The Jets search for a wide out may be just beginning. New York is in need of a few changes, but starting off with a solid receiver would mark a good step.
It has been a rough past couple of seasons for the Jets. Last year is a solid example. The Jets were far from a first-place team, in fact they were the furthest they could be. While the New England Patriots clinched the AFC East with a record of 14-2, the Jets were on the opposite end. New York fell last place of the division, as a losing team, going just 5-11.
Can the Jets have a winning season next year? Who will likely be in the wide receiver slot for New York? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
