Since its premiere in theaters, Wonder Woman has proven to be a massive success for the DCEU, as well as Gal Gadot, who stars as the titular character and Patty Jenkins, who directed the film. However, while the movie may be doing quite well in theaters, both domestically and internationally, it has been hit with a bit of back and forth over the sequel. With how well Wonder Woman has done, it seems a followup is inevitable, but that does not mean there are not other things that need to be worked out, such as whether or not Patty Jenkins will be returning as director.
According to a report from Cinema Blend, it would seem that while there may have been previous reports that indicated Jenkins would in fact be back for the sequel, the director is herself clarifying not only her own comments but the situation as a whole. Since Wonder Woman‘s success has gotten people talking about a sequel, the director has been active on social media offering up her ideas for what could happen in a second film, including possible settings. However, Patty Jenkins is now letting people know that right now she is not officially set to direct any sequel.
In a Tweet the director posted on June 29, she thanked everyone for their continued excitement regarding the future of the franchise, but she wanted everyone to know, “that wasn’t a confirmation.” Instead, she was really just sharing her own “ideas and hopes” in terms of a Wonder Woman sequel. However, she ended her message by saying that she is still hopeful about the future and the possibility of being a part of the franchise moving forward.
With so many reports out there that seemed to indicate that Patty Jenkins was in fact going to sign on for the sequel as director based on her own word, it makes sense that many fans have believed that it was already official. However, it would seem this is simply not the case yet.
For now there is no director signed on to lead the charge for Wonder Woman 2, but fans and the director herself seem hopeful that the DCEU will move forward with Patty Jenkins at the helm. While the sequel is still in the very early stages of development it sounds like there may be plenty of ideas about what direction to take Gal Gadot’s character, at least if Jenkins does in fact return as director.
