At a festival last week, while speaking to a laughing crowd, Johnny Depp essentially hinted at the possibility of an assassination attempts against President Donald Trump. It did not take long for the actor to be faced with backlash over his joking comments about someone, specifically an actor, killing the sitting president. Specifically, he asked the crowd, “When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?” Johnny Depp then took a pause before following up the question with “It’s been a while, and maybe it’s time.”
Following the backlash over his presidential assassination joke, the actor was quick to issue an apology and it was clear that even he was not laughing over his comments. While Depp said he was sorry for his “bad joke,” that has not put an end to the criticisms and now even members of President Trump’s family have weighed in on the actor’s decision to joke about killing the president.
According to The Washington Post, two members of the president’s family have something to say about Johnny Depp’s joke, with one of those family member’s being much more restrained in their comments than the other. Lara Trump, the wife of Eric Trump spoke to Sean Hannity and said that she guesses that at least he apologized. She then called the comments from the actor, “really, really sad,” as both an American, as well as a member of the Trump family. According to Lara Trump comments like this are all part of the current trend that has normalized calling for violence against the president. She even went so far as to say that comments like Johnny Depp’s are really sick and it because of it she feels, “The Republican Party is becoming the only party of tolerance here in the United States.”
Lara Trump is not the only member of the family to speak out as Donald Trump Jr., also has had a lot to say. In fact, the son of the president has made multiple comments on social media, including calling for Disney to dump Johnny Depp as he feels it would be hard for the company to keep him on after something like this. He even posted articles referencing things such as the accusations levied against the actor for abusing his ex-wife, accusations he has denied and for which he was never charged for.
While the backlash against Johnny Depp has not died down following his assassination joke, it is clear that members of President Trump’s family also have something to say about these comments. Although the actor has apologized for what he said that does not mean that this situation is dying down any time soon.
