Two Laredo, Texas police officers are recovering from surgery in San Antonio following a shootout with Antonio Geraldo Rodriguez, 55, a murder suspect who allegedly fatally shot his girlfriend, Reyna Gonzalez Zamora, 50, earlier in the day at her apartment. The two police officers were among the four officers struck by bullets in a brief shootout with Rodriguez outside a Stripes Convenience Store in the parking lot on Friday. Rodriguez died in the shootout.
According to ABC News, when the police approached Rodriguez in the parking lot of the Texas convenience store following the alleged murder of his girlfriend at around 11 a.m. on Friday, the suspect opened fire on them at approximately 5 p.m. KVUE News reported that the Stripes Convenience Store was located at 5301 McPherson Road. The police returned fire, and killed Rodriguez, but not before he shot three of the officers.
A fourth officer, Roberto Cortinas, 52, was wounded by flying glass fragments and received treatment at a hospital. He has since been released. Officers Arturo Vela, 50, and Agapito Perez, 33, had surgery on Saturday in San Antonio, Texas, and that both officers should recover with time. Following surgery, the Laredo Police Department released a statement that Perez remained in critical condition while Vela remained in serious condition, though the conditions of both officers are stable.
Another of the officers who was shot by the suspect, Officer Mario Casares, 49, was listed “in serious but stable condition” at a different hospital in San Antonio, Texas. CBS News reported that the 19-year veteran officer was shot in the torso and was taken to SAMMC. He reportedly did not need surgery but is currently under observation.
Laredo Police Chief Claudio Trevino came to San Antonio on Saturday morning to see how the three hospitalized officers were doing. He called the prognosis of the three officers “good,” and said that the officers and their families are also in good spirits.
Trevino plans to stay in San Antonio for the rest of the weekend. He will continue offering his support to the wounded police officers and their families following the shooting.
