Jaguar’s new E-Pace SUV displayed its desire to be an X-Games athlete during its debut on Thursday. The new compact crossover set a Guinness World Record for the longest barrel roll jump during its Worldwide launch event.
That’s right. A Jaguar just made a world record barrel roll jump. The little brother to the successful F-Pace SUV, the E-Pace is a smaller, but no less pretty crossover SUV shocked the world with its unconventional introduction.
The stakes are high for the E-Pace. The F-Pace is a beautiful, award winning machine, and the stakes for the E-Pace to make a name for itself was high, so Jaguar went to the extreme with their introduction of the vehicle. Terry Grant, a stunt driver, teamed up with the British automaker to set the world record for the longest barrel roll jump at ExCel London. The was an honest, 270-degree corkscrew barrel roll jump.
This specific E-Pace was not the standard vehicle that people will find in showrooms. During the jump it was clear that there was some additional undercarriage protection, but that is to be expected, as is the disclaimer to not try this at home. Grant launched the vehicle 50 feet into the air as it stormed the launch stage Thursday. According to Grant, there has been no production car to actually complete a real barrel roll jump. He has always wanted to try it, and Jaguar gave him that chance. However, it was not the first time the stunt driver had been behind the wheel. He had been practicing the jump months in advance of the record setting event Thursday.
Using 525 feet to run up to the jump, Grant managed to hold on through 5.5 Gs of force as he twisted the E-Pace through the air, nailing the jump. Representatives from Guinness were on hand to verify that the jump was a world record.
Jaguar teased the E-Pace earlier in July. When it hits showrooms, models will start at $38,600. That price point makes the new kitty competitive among other compact luxury crossovers. Due out this fall, the E-Pace will sport a 4.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with a turbo, putting out 247 horsepower. There is a sportier version that will pump out 296 horsepower and take only 5.9 seconds to go from a standstill to 60 miles per hour.
