Betsy DeVos and her husband are part of the clique lead by the Koch brothers. Why? Because Devos was lucky enough to have inherited a lot of money from the Amway corporation through her father’s multibillion-dollar fortune. However, not having to work for her money, combined with constant scrutiny over her qualifications, enhance the question if she has any business setting policy that will be the basis of the education of America’s children.
One of the biggest pushes DeVos is pushing for is privatizing the public education system. She wants to see the American people’s tax dollar turned over to for-profit groups, including private schools that exclude the poor, disabled, people of color. This includes schools that are known to cheat taxpayers out of money and students out of an education. She has spent millions of dollars over years preaching that public education should be completely privatized, which is the right-wing’s ideological nonsense.
Betsy DeVos is someone who is vehemently opposed to public education, and so she was the obvious choice to head public education. Most competent people would not even consider Devos for the position, but because of the donations made to Donald Trump’s campaign, being part of the Koch clique, the President put her in charge of the public education agency. Since taking the job, DeVos has not done one thing to improve the public school systems. Instead the Devos-Trump duo wants to give corporate groups $20 billion from the public education system.
And it has started. Looking at Arizona, Steve Yarborough, the state Senate president, pushed into law a private school fund. A school that has been corporatized, Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization (ACSTO), has received over $73 million of Arizona taxpayer money, and they have paid ACSTO’s executive director Steve Yarborough $125,000. Another for-profit corporation named HY Processing handles ACSTO administrative chores which they pay millions of dollars for. And guess what? The “Y” in HY? Yup, it stands for Yarborough, the same name of the ACSTO executive director. ACSTO also pays the landlord rent. Where is the money for education and improving school programs.
The business world has taught people over and over again that drug companies will gouge customers, airlines will throw fees onto everything to make that extra buck, and most corporate executives are paid crazy salaries for taking every shortcut, lie, and cheat to squeeze out another dime in profits, not on making it better for their customers. So why would the American people entrust our schoolchildren to someone like that, someone like Koch brother’s puppet Betsy DeVos?
