Star Wars is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year and in honor of that milestone, the Oceanside International Film Festival will celebrate the work of one of the designers who brought the film to life. During the closing ceremony scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 13, 2017, Alan Roderick-Jones, one of the iconic films production designer, will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the world of film design, which is an annual award by the festival, according to a press release.
For more than five decades, his career started in 1961 on The Victors. Roderick-Jones was a junior in Shepperton Studios art department for that film. He would then move on to projects that would win the Oscar for art direction. First was Nicholas And Alexandria from 1971 and 1977s ground breaking space drama, Star Wars. Beyond the big screen, Roderick-Jones is also an award winning art director for commercials, winning four Cleo Awards.
Alan Roderick-Jones was considered a unsung heroes of Star Wars. He worked with the late Production Designer John Barry, drafting and dressing the Cantina where Obi Wan and Luke met Han Solo and Chewbacca, The Lars family Homestead Garage, Docking Bay 94 for the Millennium Falcon, corridors on the Death Star, the Rebel base’s Throne room and War Room. Despite his work on the film, his name did not appear in the credits. Roderick-Jones was finally acknowledged when the film was released a second time. In the February/March issue of Star Wars Insider Magazine (Issue 131) profiled his work in the Star Wars saga.
Roderick-Jones is not only receiving an award at the festival, but will also hold a workshop on Saturday, August 12. Fans will see a behind the scenes view of the creation of the iconic film. He will also talk about his career and how he got to where he is today. He will talk about working on Steve McQueen’s Papillon in 1973, and 1967s The Countess of Hong Kong, written by Charles Chaplin. He will also cover, 1966s Blow Up, an art house favorite by Michelangelo Antonioni. Before the workshop, there will be a meet and greet, giving fans the chance to speak with Roderick-Jones.

From 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Roderick-Jones will hold the Meet and Greet.
