Louise Linton, the wife of Steve Mnuchin, the U.S. Treasury Secretary is in hot water over a post she made to Instagram, which was deleted, and for a condescending reply to a response to the original post. In the Instagram post, Linton fills it with hashtags in an obvious brag about a trip to Kentucky that touted the wealth of her and her husband.
Big deal, right? Well the post starts with a photo of Linton stepping off of a government plane. She was with her husband, who was there to visit Fort Knox and meet with Mitch McConnel, the Senate Majority Leader, to discuss tax reform. Why Linton was there was not clear. But then the post continued. While the photo showed her dressed in white with a slice scarf and handbag, she hashtags a number of luxury designers like Roland Mouret, Valentino, Hermes, and Tom Ford.
In Oregon, Jenni Miller, a mother of three, saw the Instagram post and could not hold her disgust back. She replied to Linton’s saying that she was happy that the people of the U.S. could pay for her little getaway. She included “#deplorable” to her post.
Sarcastically, Linton shot back at Miller, asking her if she thought they were on a personal trip, calling her adorable, and asking if she thought the U.S. government paid for her honeymoon or their personal travel. She than got ugly, touting the wealth of her family and their personal sacrifice. She blasted Miller, questioning if she had spent more money than she or her husband had, feeding the economy. She said that she was sure this business trip cost her and her husband more than the tax payer, and called Miller “adorably out of touch.” He also wished her a pleasant evening and told her to chill.
Following the back and forth, the post was deleted, and Linton’s account was set to private late Monday. However, it was too late as many screen grabs have turned up online of her post. CNN asked the Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s wife for a comment, but she did not immediately respond. However, Miller told the cable news giant that she was offended by Linton’s original post. She quoted stats saying that Linton was visiting a state were one out of five citizens live in poverty and a lot of children in the state do not know when they will eat next. She point out that instead of Linton helping these poor individuals, she chose to brag about her clothes and how expensive they were.
Linton, who married Mnuchin last June in a lavish wedding ceremony attended by President Donald Trump and his wife Melanie, and was officiated by Mike Pence, the Vice President, has been in trouble before over social media and was forced to change her Twitter account private after she self published a book. The book was about a year she spent in Zambia and faced criticism over misleading facts about the country’s politics. She pulled the book following backlash, and apologized on Twitter before turning her account private. Steve Mnuchin’s wife is a former actress and has a law degree from the University of West Los Angeles, where she attended after graduating from Pepperdine.
