The Joker from DC comics, television, and movies is an iconic villain. He has been portrayed by a number of actors with some of the best performances coming from the late Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, and the late and gone to early Heath Ledger. Jared Leto has taken on the role recently, and is showing a very different take on the Clown Prince of Crime, but now there is word that Leonardo DiCaprio may be taking on the role next. Last week, Warner Bros. announced the news that The Hangover’s Todd Phillips would direct a Joker origin movie, which would not star the current Joker actor Leto.
Jared Leto first appeared in the Suicide Squad as the insane clown criminal, and is scheduled to appear in a number of upcoming films, a Suicide Squad sequel and in the Harley Quinn spin-off with Margot Robbie. For some reason, this new film origin of the Joker, Warner Bros. is considering someone besides Leto to tackle the iconic role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
If it is true that DiCaprio is being pursued by Warner Bros. to tackle the role of the Joker, that could explain a rumored collaboration. Word is that Martin Scorsese, who has collaborated with Leonardo DiCaprio a number of times, may be attached to the Joker origin movie too. It appears that the studio may attempt to use Scorsese’s friendship with DiCaprio to pull the Titanic actor into the comic book movie world.
There has been no confirmation from Leonardo DiCaprio’s representatives, or reps for Scorsese as of yet, and Warner Bros. is keeping their lips sealed at this time. Fans will have to wait to see if the speculation comes true.
One thing that is known, for at least now, the Joker origin movie will not be part of the DC Extended Universe series of films. The origin of the hysterical criminal is a tricky story to tell, and in film has been told differently a number of times. In the Michael Keaton Batman film, the Joker is the criminal who killed Bruce Wayne’s parents, and later Batman tosses the killer into a large container of acid, giving birth to the Joker. However, in the Christian Bale Batman, the killer of Wayne’s parents is killed after facing a parole board. In the television series Gotham, fans believe that they have seen that Joker born in the form of Cameron Monaghan’s portrayal of Jerome Valeska. The writers are pushing the feeling that Valeska will soon take on the persona of the Joker.
The most common, and one of the comic book origins of the Joker is that the villain, the Red Hood, falls into a vat of some unknown chemical, it turns his hair green, makes his lips red, bleaches his skin, and drives him insane. Variations of this origin have been repeated, like in the Keaton film, and even in the Suicide Squad when Dr. Harleen Quinzel falls into a vat of chemicals, and the Leto Joker dives in after her, and Harley Quinn is born. What origin Warner Bros. will follow with Leonardo DiCaprio is yet to be seen.
